Still Plugging Away At The Spitfire Hangar
February brought few surprises to the Y2-K restoration project, our weather problems have kept our visitor count up only slightly and definitely not the same increases we have been experiencing the past year. Our engineer took February off and how can you blame him, Bonn has been working without a break for 17 straight months. The hangar remained open for tours on Saturdays and the rest of the crew did some fund raising and part swapping with various Spitfire projects around the world. Dave traded some spare fuselage frames for some new elevator parts from the UK, we sold some spare windscreen frames on eBay and a seat to a project in New Zealand.
Planning is now well underway for the 7th annual Open House and complete details are featured on the new ”Open House“ page that is being planned for this website, as some of the events planned for the open house are still being developed they will be announced as they become available.
We have some sad news to share this report, one of our strongest supporters over the years was Len Dawes of Courtenay B.C. he was a constant visitor to our hangar and a lover of the Spitfire. Len created a model of the Spitfire and gave it to us a few years ago to display in our hangar. Many people commented on the model over the years and we appreciated Len’s enthusiasm for what we are doing, sadly Len Dawes passed away early in February. We thank his family and friends for the very nice donation they made to the Y2-K Spitfire project on Lens behalf, God Speed Len.
If you’re planning a trip to Vancouver Island try and arrange your plans to coincide with our open house, it’s an event you won’t want to miss. Keep an eye on our new web page for up to the minute details. If you have any questions about the project or need help in making a donation, contact the Y2K Project Manager.
Thanks again for your time and support
